You talked to ChatGPT or Claude for years. What you said is yours — and the only copy sits on their server. Both companies will hand you the whole thing if you ask — with one hole on Claude’s side, named below. Most people never ask. Here is exactly how, read off their own help pages today, and what to do with the box once it lands.
Deleted conversations are not in it; an export cannot bring them back. The export button is not offered on Business, Enterprise or Healthcare workspaces. If the menus have moved, search “export” inside Settings — the door is always there.

The phone apps cannot start an export — use a computer. Free, Pro and Max accounts export their own data; on Team and Enterprise the organisation’s primary owner has to ask.

If you used Cowork — the desktop work sessions where Claude works in your folders, builds files and runs scheduled tasks — none of it is in the zip. Anthropic’s help page says the export holds “conversation data and the user data for your account”; it does not mention Cowork, and our own zip proved it: the chats arrived, the Cowork sessions did not. There is no export button for them. For heavy users that is most of the work, and the expensive part, and it stays with Anthropic.
The sessions still exist, on Anthropic’s servers, behind a different door than the chats — one that opens only from a signed-in browser with a request no menu offers. We walked it for our own record on 2026-08-25: 87 Cowork sessions, 42,830 turns, about 9 MB of verbatim work that the export had never carried.
Anthropic’s help page re-read 2026-09-15; the Cowork count is our own record, measured 2026-08-25.
Both companies send a zip. We opened our own, so this is what is actually there, not what a brochure says:
conversations.json — every conversation you kept, each one stored as a tree of messages: when you edited a question or hit “regenerate”, the export keeps every branch, not just the one you ended on. One year of one person’s ChatGPT — 257 conversations, 49,677 messages — came to a 12.9 MB zip.
conversations.json — every conversation, with its messages in order; users.json — one line, your account; and a projects/ folder with one file per project you made. Ten conversations came to 1.5 MB.
It is all one long machine-format line. Any text editor opens it. Nobody can read it that way.
That is the whole point of asking. A zip you cannot read is a receipt, not a record. These run on your own computer, nothing is uploaded, no account is made, you pay once:
RECLAiM — $19 turns the raw export into clean, dated, readable pages, one per conversation, timestamps and attachments kept, each page stamped with an integrity hash. It reads both ChatGPT and Claude exports. Said plainly, as on its own page: RECLAiM v2.5.0 walks every branch of an edited ChatGPT conversation, and its free receipt checks the rebuild against your own file with the network shut. Your run prints its version at the end; if yours says v2.3.1 it followed one branch -- write to onwardai.ops@gmail.com and the current zip is sent to you. Claude exports come back whole either way.
SiFT — $29 searches all of it at once — every word you ever wrote — three ways to ask.
ANONYMiZE — $39 strips names, phones and IDs before you share any of it, with a receipt of every change.
Done for you — $200 if you would rather install nothing: you send the zip, you get the pages back.
Cowork retrieval, done for you — $1,000 for the sessions the export leaves out. Specialist work, not a button: they come out only through a door no menu offers, only from your signed-in browser, and you get every session back as dated, readable pages on your own machine — nothing of yours kept here afterward. We built it because nothing else would bring our own record home. Write, and a person answers.
Why bother? Because your record is yours. Accounts close, policies change, companies get acquired. A copy on your own machine answers to nobody. ← OnwardAI · the store · how it all fits
