Deleting is easy and it is final: OpenAI says a deleted chat cannot be restored, and no export you ask for afterwards will carry it. So the order matters. Copy, then delete. Here are the steps as they stand in October 2026, and the one step to do before any of them.
Export steps checked against OpenAI’s help page 2026-09-14 and still matching the menus on 2026-10-29.
In the sidebar, the three dots beside the chat → Delete → confirm. It leaves the sidebar at once.
Settings → Data controls → Delete all chats → confirm. Archive all chats sits right beside it; archiving deletes nothing (archived chats live under Archived chats in the same place), so read the button before you press it.
Settings → Personalization → Memory → the three dots → Delete and turn off memory. This does not delete past chats, and deleting chats does not clear memory. Two switches.
Steps as published in guides dated October 2026; OpenAI’s own help page refused our read on 2026-10-29, so if a menu has moved, search “delete” inside Settings.
Deleted chats are scheduled for permanent deletion within 30 days and cannot be restored; the timing can differ for chats already de-identified or that must be kept for security or legal reasons. Deleted memory logs may be kept up to 30 days. That window is theirs, not yours: there is no button that brings a chat back during it.
Once it is on your own disk it answers to nobody. SiFT ($29) searches every word of it at once. ANONYMiZE ($19) strips names, phones and IDs before you share any of it, with a receipt of every change. Done-for-you, $200 if you would rather install nothing.
Why bother? Because your record is yours. Accounts close, policies change, companies get acquired. A copy on your own machine answers to nobody. ← OnwardAI · the store · how to export · how it all fits
